Top 10 questions volunteers ask about serving in Children’s ministries
1. What if I have no experience?
We want you to be successful as you serve. We will give you the tools and training that will help you do the work God has given you (Ephesians 4:12).
2. How much time does it take to prepare a lesson?
You can easily prepare a lesson in 2 hours, but you will experience more personal spiritual growth if you begin to devote time in prayer and study through the week. Our first concern is that you prepare your own heart and pray that God would give direction to your teaching.
3. Do you provide the materials and lesson?
Yes, we will give you a teacher manual that provides each week’s lesson and application ideas to help you make your presentation of the material interesting and effective. Our resource room has all the materials that you need to make your class time unique and interesting to the children.
4. Will I have help?
All classrooms are adequately staffed to provide safe and effective teacher/child ratios. Typically there are at least two assistants to help a lead teacher interact with the kids. Being a teacher’s helper is a great way to get started in CM.
5. What if I can’t be there on a Sunday?
We recognize people take vacations in the summer and are sometimes sick. In these instances, we can provide a substitute for you when you give advance notice. One of the most important responsibilities you have in this ministry is to “connect” with the children God has given you to teach. In order to develop a relationship with children, you need to be in the class consistently.
6. How long do I have to serve?
Summer staff serves through the months of June, July and August to allow our school year teacher to take a break. During the rest of the year, we encourage all of our children’s ministries staff to serve consistently for nine months so that they have the opportunity to develop deeper relationships with the children in their classroom.
7. Will I get to pick the age and time I teach?
We try to accommodate your preferences as we staff each service and grade/age level. We recognize that God gifts people differently and we try to place teacher where they most naturally serve and interact with the children.
8. Do I have to change diapers in the nursery?
Only if you are a woman above the age of 18. We not allow men or minors to change diapers in the nursery as a mutual protection policy.
9. What if I don’t have kids?
Many people serve in CM who do not have kids. We are blessed to have a ministry that represents all generations within our congregation. Whatever your “kid status,” there is a place for you to invest in children (Psalm 145:4).
